This piece marks number 11, and was inspired by the song Salt, by Bad Suns. I was going for a sort of opposite ends feeling in this piece, and I will try my best to explain what its all about!
Starting with the figure on the left, she has orange hair, light green headphones, and horns coming out of her head. There are two hands placed in front of her, the hands are red mixed with purple. Her eyes are blue, and she is neck up in orange water. Around her head and in the sky above her are varieties of fruit, watermelon, starfruit, raspberry, tomato, strawberry, kiwi, and lemon. And although it is a bit hard to see, there is salt in both of her eyes. In this piece, I hoped to pass along what I felt that the song really conveyed! A sort of loss of identity, and a desire to have a real one. And feeling salt, but wanting to really feel sweet. "Cause these memories are nothing to me, just salt." I wanted to try and convey that as best as I could. The figure in the painting is trapped by her current identity, trapped by bad feelings. All around her is sort of "low hanging fruit" the things she desires, but she couldn't get to it. Shes sort of sinking into these waters, and shes trapped in them, and can't get free. I was attempting the blue background as a sort of normal, happier skyline that she'll never have, because shes stuck behind these falsehoods, her salt. I really wanted the concept of having negative emotions, or having bad thoughts about yourself, and hearing music that sometimes reminds you that you are stuck like that, be very evident. Of course, forward and directly conveying things can be a bit difficult, and there was some confusion. especially for me, I find explaining things in long winded conversations to be oddly difficult. Once again, thank you for reading! I hope there is clarity, if not, feel free to comment with questions! -Kaitrin

This is my 10th piece for my sustained investigation. The mediums I worked in were mostly watercolor, as well as chalk and oil pastels.
Overall, this piece was largely inspired by the song Nobody, by Mitski. I felt that it fit a certain view I had on a heartache piece, and I wanted to interpret both the sadness present and the envy, the aching need for love and always falling short of finding it. I started by just using the blues and the greens, but I wanted there to be more colors on the girl then just that. The bandages could be a symbol of her broken, scarred body, and there are places where her body has different colored dots like yellow and red, sort of mixed together. This could also represent her own previous scars from attempts at love. And her wings, a mixture of greens, to symbolize her desire to fly. The Background is a bit more complicated, but as I showed it to another today and asked for their interpretation, they said it could mean many different things to different people. So I will do my best to describe it to you in my own eyes, but your welcome to your own ideas :). The eyes of different colors are glaring emotions; quite literally. Anger and hatred, jealously and sorrow. It might be hard to see, but the blue eyes are looking away, while the other colored eyes are looking directly at her. This is because I wanted it to seem as though the eyes were things she couldn't bear to look at herself, so they look at her instead. But in this piece, she is facing them, as the music is her gateway to her emotions, and she is able to face them as they are. The smaller, white eyes represent the eyes of others, How would she be seen as anger, or jealously? Those small, white eyes can seem like a million tiny eyes always watching for one to show signs of weakness, in this case emotions. - Kaitrin |
